C'est Bob Marley qui écrivit No Woman No Cry, mais il préféra la créditer à son ami Vincent "Tartar" Ford pour éviter de reverser des droits d'auteurs à Cayman Music.
Le titre provient d'une expression jamaïcaine, « no woman, nuh cry » qui en patois jamaïcain signifie « femme, ne pleure pas ».
